Negotiating Distance

Negotiating Distance accompanies the launch of the first issue of Agnoscis journal. The exhibition takes its title from a phrase used in the journal’s inaugural editorial, in which Sarah White asks the question: “How do we negotiate the distance from that which is desired?”

 

In this context, the object of desire is an encounter with the self, or with an ‘other’, even a divine other. The phrase “negotiating the distance from that which is desired” can also be understood as an apt way of describing the process of making art in general, painting specifically, and more particularly the practices of the four painters whose works are exhibited here.
