Entropic Grey

 

Entropic Grey is a colour mixed from the slow accumulation of my leftover paint, becoming a median of all the colours I’ve used over the course of years. Subtly shifting chromatically over time, this grey embodies the progressive tendency to uniformity that entropy describes: the universe’s slow drift towards a lukewarm average.

 

Each painting begins with an even layer of this grey, which I then wipe away to varying degrees until the white primer shows through in the lightest areas, the image emerging through subtraction.

 

The source material is a set of ‘failed’ photographs taken more than a decade ago on 35mm film — images that came out under or overexposed, or out of focus. The attempt to faithfully translate the photograph into paint becomes a meditation on intangibility and the fugitive.
